The Stephenville City Council met in a special session Tuesday night and the first item on the agenda was the property tax rate for 2016. Ultimately, the contentious issue that resulted in a four-to-four tie vote was decided by Mayor Kenny Weldon.
The dispute over the property tax rate was suggested in committee earlier this year when .49 cents per $100 of valuation was proposed.
As discussions on the approval of that tax rate began, councilman Rhett Harrison made a motion to reduce the rate to 48-and-a-half cents per $100 of valuation.
An hour-long discussion ensued, then Mayor Weldon voted to approve the originally proposed tax rate and the matter was settled.
