An internal investigation at the Erath County Jail that followed inquires by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement has resulted in the firing of two more county employees. Jail Administrator Kenny Phillips was terminated on Tuesday, and Sgt. David Bass resigned from his job at the jail as a result of the internal audit, which began shortly after Chief Investigator Heath Crossland and Captain Jesse Metcalf signed on with the County Sheriff’s Department in January.
Sheriff Matt Coates said Metcalf spearheaded the investigation after the state commission alerted local officials to a number of problems at the jail. The internal investigation concluded Tuesday. The last inspection of the jail by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards was in January 2016. Phillips claimed they found no deficiencies.
