Digging through local news archives will get a lot easier thanks to a joint effort by Tarleton State University’s Dick Smith Library and the Stephenville Public Library.
The Ladd & Katherine Hancher Library Foundation donated a grant of over $10,000 this month that will help fund the digital archiving of old local newspapers published between 1882 and 1922.
Mary Meredith, director of the Stephenville Public Library, said the grant will facilitate transitioning publications from microfilm to a digital format.
Historic copies of the Stephenville Empire and Stephenville Tribune—published today as the Stephenville Empire-Tribune—are currently available on microfilm at TSU, which is a difficult medium to access.
