Tarleton State University professor Marcy Tanter has been selected a Fulbright Scholar to South Korea, where she’ll teach the works of Emily Dickinson and other American women poets at Dongguk University in 2018.
With the possible exception of Walt Whitman, Dickinson is recognized as the most important American poet of the 19th century, known as the reclusive “Belle of Amherst”, Massachusetts. Dr.Tanter earned her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, where she wrote her dissertation on Dickinson and 19th century British poetry. Since joining Tarleton’s English faculty in 1998, she has expanded her studies to include African-American literature and culture as well as South Korean poetry in its English translation.
