On June 25, 1877, Erath County Sheriff James Mastin was murdered while attempting to arrest a horse thief. He has lain in an unmarked grave in Stephenville’s West End Cemetery for 140 years. On Sunday, June 25, 2017, the Sheriff was posthumously honored with a monument dedication ceremony on the east side of the Erath County Courthouse. The monument is honoring not only Sheriff Mastin, but also all the law enforcement officers in the great state of Texas for their dedication to keeping all our citizens safe.
The ceremony was conducted at 3:00 p.m., and was sponsored by the Stephenville Masonic Lodge #267 and
2nd Texas Frontier District Camp #1904.
